The army of Don Pedro of Aragon arrives in Messina and is welcomed by Leonato, Messina's governor. Benedick of Padua, a soldier in Don Pedro's army, proclaims his enmity to love and engages in a skirmish of wits with Leonato's niece, Beatrice. They never meet but that there is a skirmish of wits between them. They meet, and exchange some name--calling. Benedick says that he will never marry, that he has a heart of stone. Claudio wants to marry Hero, Leonato's daughter.
What is the only thing that Beatrice and Benedick agree upon in the opening scene?
They both want never to marry. Benedick says that he doesn't want to, and Beatrice is not made, it seems, for marrying, nor does she wish to. Benedick tells her that this saves one man, at least, from having a scratched face!

The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson
When Rachel Carson thinks of the sea floor, she thinks of sedimentation, of the layers of rock, soil, shells, and ash slowly (or quickly) drifting down and becoming part of the sea floor. And the ice burgs carry rocks down, the rives carry stones and shells, and dirt.
The millions of shells drift down, and become fossils. They are the most plentiful, for there are many little creatures with shells in the sea. It is like a Great Snowfall, with all of the shell, rocks, and the rest as flakes in this blizzard.
There is an interesting shell-creature, the Globigerina, a unicellular creature, and it makes its own shell! It divides in two, and then makes two new shells, letting the old one fall. In lime-rich, warm waters this creature multiples rapidly. This little creature adds its bit to the Great Snowfall.

Nicias--The End
The End of Nicias
Nicias was captured, and all the rest of the generals as well. The Sycrusians wanted to kill all the generals, but a message was sent to them enabling them to kill themselves with the help of the guards. The rest of the Athenians were sent to work in the quarries, but some were thought to be servants, and were sold as slaves. But their orderly conduct was a great help to them, and many were set free for it, or gained to respect of the masters they staid with. Many were set free because they recited some of a famous poet's poetry, that was much in demand among the Sycrusians.
I would rather be sold as a slave, because the people in the quarries only got a pint of barley for food, and a little water. Also, I might be set free if I knew any poetry.
The End!

King Lear Acts 4 sn. 7 -5 sns. 1-2
What do Lear’s change of garments and the music that is played have to do with the restoration of his senses?
He is not used to fine clothes and music, because he has lived a rough life for a while. The sensations are so new that he wakes up.
What is the reaction of Goneril and Regan to the speech made by Albany?
Regan is suspicious, wanting to know why this was discussed, and Goneril says to forget their quarrels and bind together against the enemy.
When Lear and Cordelia are captured, what does Lear say the two of them will do while in prison?
Here I quote from memory: "We two alone will sing like birds i' the cage. /When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down and ask of thee forgiveness. /And we'll live, and pray, and sing, and tell old tales and laugh at gilded butterflys, /And hear poor roguhes talk of court news, and we'll talk with them too, /Who loses and who wins, who's in, who's out, and take upon 's the mystries of things, as if we were God's spies, /And wear out, in a walled prison, packs and sets of great ones, that ebb and flow by the moon.
Cordelia and Lear are reunited, Albany makes a speech, and Edmund deciedes what to do with Cordelia and Lear if he gets them. Then Cordelia is defeated.

Nicias
Nicias was mad at the new general, because he had led them into defeat. They all but Nicias decided to flee the place, it being unwholesome, many of the of the men being sick. When they were defeated again, Nicias was won over, and made ready to leave. Just as all was ready, an eclipse occurred. This scared the Athenians, because they had neglected the study of the stars and planets, despising all who studied them. Really, it was a good thing, since they had to work in darkness, but they did not take advantage of it. They were defeated trying to sail away, and were trapped. They are not in a good position.
The Athenians were defeated because they were in big ships. They were also in a difficult position, because rocks were thrown at them, but they could only shoot darts and arrows back. Darts and arrows don't fly true when they are shot in ships. Does this recall to mind any other defeat in history? I think of the Spanish Armanda, with the English being able to defeat them because of the mobility of their ships.
